Chapter 12

Cooper

I sat at the large dining room table with countless people I’d never met before, but I quickly realized they were more up to speed about the situation than I was. Not that that was difficult, considering I’d been living under a rock for the past month. Literally. I still could barely fathom that my friend was alive. I was thankful for it. Kian loved his brother deeply, and I knew he had mourned his loss greatly. I had as well.

When Kian told me how protective he’d been when I was my beast and then in my human form, there were no hurt feelings. If anything, it gave my beast a bit of peace. I wasn’t planning on dying or even leaving my mate’s side anytime. Knowing he had a brother who would take on his friend and brother’s mate to protect his sibling—was everything to me. There was no way I could be angry with that and even less risk of me taking it personally.

I took a spoonful of the soup and drank it down, trying not to overwhelm my system. It had been many days since I’d had any sustenance, and Morgan had instructed me to take it slowly, and that’s what I’d been doing. I’d been hoping he was wrong and that after one meal, I’d be good as new, but it was taking a bit to ease into full meals. But soup? Soup I could handle. At least I handled it earlier when Morgan brought it by the cabin.

“You’ll only want to have about half of that,” Morgan, Gideon’s mate and Forerunner of the Asilo pack, reminded me. “You might think you want more, but take your time.”

I nodded in understanding. If there was one thing this place and these omegas knew an awful lot about, it was rehabilitation. I was grateful for it. My body was a mess, but healing well. And so was my mate’s, but there were some emotional pieces to work through.

The bit of soup and the nap did me a world of good. But none of it had done as much for me as being in my mate’s arms. My omega was stronger than most, and not just physically either. He’d been through the wringer over the past few years and especially lately. And he still managed to save his entire pride. My admiration for him grew with each passing second.

We’d both thought Gideon was dead. That messed with my head a lot, but it had to be a thousand times worse for Kian. Sure, Gideon was my friend, but that was nothing close to the bond of siblings, especially siblings who were all each other had.

“When you’re feeling up to it, I want to take a blood sample and talk to you about your experiences,” Mortimer said. He was one of the old healers. I’d met him a time or two around the council building, and of course, I’d heard of him. He was a legend.

I wasn’t surprised about the questions, but I was curious about what they were looking for with the blood samples.
